On an unassuming industrial estate behind a fuel station in Hastings, you will find, without question, one of the UK’s foremost specialists in classic Mini race preparation. Mondo Sport, operated by Leigh and Gerald Dale, are long-standing customers of Quantum Suspension and a quick tour of their workshop will introduce you to pretty much every product Quantum have offered for the classic Mini, past and present.
Gerald Dale’s own race car is both test-bed and showcase for the products and services Mondo Sport offer. The attention to detail Leigh has lavished upon the pair’s Mini is simply astonishing, with aircraft quality fasteners and fittings retaining every component and panel on the beautifully prepared shell.
The Mondo Mini normally uses four-way adjustable Quantum X Series—Leigh remarking that they are a big leap forward over the 2000s era two-way adjustable dampers they were using previously—but a program of development means these were temporarily being swapped out for Quantum Two.Zeros during the photoshoot, in order to test the latest improvements to the design.
The Quantum Zero is available with one or two ways of adjustment. Spherical joints are standard equipment and rubber mounting washers are supplied for the rear dampers. The hard anodized aluminium bodies are not threaded although custom builds requiring coilover shock absorbers can be accomodated on request.
The Classic Mini is a popular choice for historic motorsport and with Goodwood, home of the Revival, only two hours drive along the coast, Mondo Sport are custodians of several Appendix K historic Mini race cars. In order to comply with the strict regulations laid out by the FIA, Quantum also offer a “historic” damper that is modelled on those used by teams in the 60s in dimension and operation.
The historic dampers offered for the Classic Mini are non-adjustable and have rubber mounting bushes. The steel bodies are Xylan coated for corrosion resistance and ease of maintenance.
